Alyssia Washington came to Mott Community College to pursue a career path in medicine. That all changed when she started taking foreign languages. “After I began to take foreign language classes, I fell in love with languages and learning about other cultures,” said Alyssia. Now her long-term goal is to become fluent in at least two other languages and to travel abroad.
Alyssia graduated April 30 with two Associate’s degrees, in Science and General Studies, and after one additional class, will have a third in Arts. She has her sights set on attending UM-Flint to study Linguistics and Spanish.
While at Mott Alyssia made the most of her time in the Foreign Language Department, hanging out at La mesa Española (The Spanish Table-an open session for practicing Spanish and learning about the culture), participating in the International Talent Show (she won Fan Favorite) and helping organize the inaugural Japan Fair. She was also a member of Student Government, the National Student Leadership Conference, a Math tutor, a Spanish tutor, and a “Women in Education” Fellow.
She is especially excited about the International Certificate program. “The the potential as part of this program to study abroad or have an international experience is very exciting. I HIGHLY suggest you check this program out!” Alyssia said.
Her advice to potential students? “You know that phrase ‘It takes a village to raise a child?’ My advice to you is to RELY on those around you. They are your village,” she said. “At Mott you are like family. There are many professors, advisors and staff who WANT you to succeed and will take you under their wing to help you grow. Mott really was my path to Excellence!”
